Backstory:
One day, Idris and her pack were at Eos’ cave celebrating the summer solstice. Eos and Thames were at a nearby river fishing and the rest of the pack was preparing various meats and veggies and sweets for later in the day. Suddenly, they heard a squawk and there was a flash of fire nearby. When the fire died down, they saw an old and decrepit looking bird in the ashes. They rushed to aid him, but they were too late. The poor bird sighed and the light left its eyes. Unsure what else to do, Charlie and Sultan started to dig a hole for a grave.
About this time, Eos and Thames returned to the cave. Eos burst into laughter at seeing his friend’s reactions and explained that they should wait before burying the bird. Before they could ask what he meant, the pile of ashes suddenly burst into flames yet again. This time, when the flames died down, there was a living, tiny baby bird. Everyone except Eos was shocked beyond belief and immediately started to pester the dragon with questions. Before responding, Eos leaned in and breathed on the little bird, who suddenly began to glow with a soft blue light. As it glowed, the bird began to grow and mature. Red and gold feathers sprouted out along its body and it grew to about the size of a swan. Bero turned and thanked Eos for his help. Now the pack was even more confused than before and plied him with questions.
Calmly, the bird (who introduced himself as Bero) and Eos began to explain things. Being a phoenix, Bero can die and be reborn again, which is what had just happened. Bero and Eos had been friends for centuries, and whenever it was Bero’s time to be reborn, he would seek out Eos so the dragon could protect him in his vulnerably baby state. Recently, Eos discovered a magical spell that would allow Bero to age so he is old enough to take care of himself.
Finally all in understanding, the pack chatted with Bero. Most of them had questions about the past and things he’d seen. By the time they were too exhausted to talk anymore, they’d eaten all the food they’d gathered and all fell asleep in a circle around a fire pit. Bero decided he liked these friends too much to leave just yet, so he currently lives with Eos in the cave, though he frequently travels about the world, always learning and looking for new things.
