Backstory:
Sterling was just a puppy when her human family adopted her. She loved them dearly and they loved her back. She secretly loved the little boy the best of all, probably because they spent the most time together. They bonded almost instantly and were rarely out of each other’s sites.
One day, the family decided to go for a picnic. The boy rode in the back seat with Sterling sitting on his lap and looking excitedly out the window. Out of nowhere, a deer bounded in front of their car. The father swerved to avoid it but ended up getting the car in a ditch. Frantically, he jerked the wheel the other way, overcorrected, and the car flipped over and over down the road until it crashed into a tree. The boy grabbed Sterling and tried to hold onto her, but she slipped from his grasp in the commotion and flipped about the car like a little rag doll. Fortunately, she somehow got herself tangled up in the blanket and bags of food that were meant for lunch, which probably saved her life.
When she came to, she hurt all over. Trying to walk revealed she had damaged her right front paw and couldn’t walk on it. Struggling over to the little boy, she licked his face frantically to try and get a reaction, but to no avail. His neck had snapped in the vicious flips from the car. Sterling crawled outside as best she could and went to the windows to check on the boy’s parents. They were covered in blood but at least they were breathing, if only barely. The puppy collapsed near the window and howled sadly for the loss of her friend and hopefully to wake up the parents. But the pain of her own injury, the loss of blood, and the shock caught up with her and her world went dark.
On waking up, Sterling was relieved to find her leg felt much better, but the pain had moved to her heart instead. With a deep sigh, she looked around to get hear bearings. A wolf was staring at her, green eyes full of sympathy. The wolf explained that her name was Circuit and that she had found Sterling by the car and pulled her away so she could tend her leg. When Circuit asked if Sterling wanted to go back to her family, the puppy shook her tiny little head and said that it would hurt too much to go back now with the boy gone. With that, Circuit invited the puppy to come home with her to Ephera. Eyes shining, Sterling happily agreed to go along, latching onto Circuit as if she were the only lifesaver left in the world.
For the rest of the trip home, Sterling stuck close to Circuit. Though she still missed the boy, Circuit’s bubbly personality snuck into Sterling’s dark thoughts and kept the pup from dwelling in her own misery. When they arrived at Ephera, Circuit took her around and introduced her to the rest of the pack. Sterling was surprised by how welcome she felt and immediately settled into her new life. For the most part, she lives in the same cave as Circuit, who has taken on the role of her adoptive mother, but she occasionally makes trips to the desert to see her “Uncle Horus and Uncle Xanon”.
Sterling still thinks about her old family and the little boy, but she knows it's not good to dwell on the past. Instead she focuses on living in the moment and has become a bundle of tireless energy in between frequent naps in the sun.
